1. Metro 2033 (2010)

Twenty years after a nuclear holocaust, the remnants of humanity cling to life within the tunnels of the Moscow Metro. Artyom, a young man raised in the northern station of Exhibition, witnesses his home coming under siege from a new, terrifying threat known as the Dark Ones. These mysterious, telepathic creatures exert a psychic pressure that drives survivors to madness and death.

A veteran Ranger named Hunter tasks Artyom with a desperate mission: travel to the legendary fortified station of Polis to warn the rest of the Metro. To reach his destination, Artyom must navigate a subterranean world torn apart by the warring Red Line and Fourth Reich factions. The journey forces him out onto the lethal, frozen surface, where the very air is toxic and mutated predators claim the ruins of the old world.

The narrative explores the tension between scientific survival and the supernatural occurrences that haunt the tunnels. Artyom meets various travelers, like the enigmatic Bourbon and the philosophical Khan, who offer conflicting perspectives on the Dark Ones' true nature. As he witnesses the brutality of human factions fighting over scraps of a dead civilization, he begins to wonder if humanity is even worth saving from its own extinction.

The story culminates in a high-stakes military expedition to a hidden missile silo known as D6. Artyom and a squad of Rangers intend to use these ancient weapons to permanently erase the Dark Ones' hive from the surface. As the countdown to the strike begins, Artyom experiences a final, vivid vision that challenges everything he believes about his enemy. Will the fire of the old world bring peace, or is Artyom about to commit a mistake that can never be undone?

2. Metro: Last Light (2013)

One year after the missile strike on the Dark Ones, Artyom is now a formal member of the Spartan Rangers, stationed within the newly secured D6 military bunker. Rumors of a single surviving Dark One sighting on the surface prompt the Rangers to send Artyom on a final mission to eliminate the creature. However, his mission is sabotaged when he is captured by the Fourth Reich, leading to a frantic escape through a Metro on the brink of civil war.

The narrative centers on a massive power struggle as the Red Line, the Nazis, and the Hanseatic League all plot to seize control of the bio-weapons stored within D6. Artyom finds himself in an uneasy alliance with a Red Line officer named Pavel, only to be betrayed as the political stakes escalate. Amidst this chaos, Artyom discovers that the surviving Dark One is merely a child, forcing him to reconsider his role in the previous massacre.

The story delves into themes of guilt and the possibility of a second chance. Artyom chooses to protect the young creature, realizing that its unique abilities might be the key to understanding the supernatural anomalies of the wasteland. The tension rises as the Red Line prepares a final, devastating assault on the Spartan stronghold, using a manufactured plague to weaken their enemies and seize total control of the Metro.

The conflict reaches its peak at the gates of D6, where the Rangers prepare for a suicidal last stand against the overwhelming Red Line army. Artyom must fight through the chaos of the bunker's corridors while the young Dark One assists him in revealing the true intentions of the conspirators. With the bunker rigged to explode and the enemy at the door, Artyom faces a final, desperate choice. Can he find a way to save his brothers without sacrificing the future of the world?

3. Metro Exodus (2019)

Artyom remains obsessed with the idea that life exists beyond the irradiated ruins of Moscow, despite the skepticism of his fellow Rangers and his wife, Anna. During a forbidden excursion to the surface, he discovers a high-tech jamming array and a functional steam locomotive, revealing that the world outside has been intentionally silenced. This discovery forces Artyom, Anna, and the Spartan Rangers to flee Moscow aboard the train, known as the Aurora, to find a new home in the East.

The journey spans a full year, taking the crew across the vast Russian wilderness, from the flooded banks of the Volga to the parched remains of the Caspian Sea. Each season brings new challenges, as the survivors encounter isolated communities that have regressed into cults, tribalism, or cannibalism. The narrative shifts from claustrophobic tunnels to expansive open landscapes, where the beauty of nature clashes with the lingering horrors of the war.

The story focuses on the evolving relationships within the Aurora's crew and Artyom’s growing responsibility as a leader. As they search for a fabled government sanctuary, the health of the crew—and specifically Anna—begins to fail due to the harsh conditions and chemical exposures. The tension between the hope for a "green" world and the reality of a planet scarred by radiation creates a constant pressure on the group's morale and resources.

The final act leads the Aurora to the dead, frozen city of Novosibirsk, where the radiation levels are lethal even by Moscow standards. Artyom must venture alone into the city’s depths to find a life-saving medicine for Anna, retracing the final, tragic steps of the city’s own fallen defenders. As his strength fades and his visions return, he faces a final struggle against the darkness. Will the crew of the Aurora find their promised land, or will the journey end in the silence of the winter?
